Do YOU want good food at your holiday cocktail party and still impress people? I’m not suggesting hiring a caterer, nor am I talking about frozen food you’ve in you fridge. Ever think about doing some cooking. The New York Times have made a collection of 101 Simple Appetizers in 20 Minutes or Less that are as easy to eat as they are to make.

4 Toss high-quality crab meat with minced shallots, a little tarragon or a lot of parsley and/or basil, and enough mayonnaise to bind. Also good on lettuce leaves.
5 Mash together best-quality tuna, minced anchovies, minced garlic, chopped oil-cured olives and olive oil as necessary.
6 New York comfort food: Spread cream cheese or crème fraîche on small bagels or bagel chips; black bread is also terrific. Top with sturgeon, sable or lox.

Each appetizer can be served at room temperature and takes 20mins or less. And none require a plate. Most of these recipes are beyond simple, they never do in two steps what can be done in one, and they need to decoration. Have any simple appetizer ideas? Let’s hear ‘em in the comments.

Ingredients:

  • 2 avocados, peeled, halved and pitted
  • 2 papayas, peeled, halved and seeded (I don’t know what papayas are like where you live, but the ones down here in Caribbean are not so big! I needed two for this recipe – the key here is to have equal amounts of avocado and Papaya).
  • 1 large slightly green banana
  • 2 tsp butter
  • 1 3/4 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 tbsp cinnamon
Method:
1. Slice the banana lengthwise into equal slices.
2. Fry the slices in a little butter until slightly brown on both sides.
3. Brush the butter thinly over the banana and fry for a further few minutes.
4. Mix the sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle each slice with the mixture.

Serves: 2
Serve with ice cream or whipped cream

Titiri Accras can be very addictive, trust me I know. Consider yourself warned. I can still remember this lady, who every Friday night fried Titiri Accra at the side on of the road in Newtown. People would come from all over Dominica just to buy these Accras. The only downside to this recipe – Titiri are not common in the mainland countries. But you can always improvise by using salt fish instead of Titiri. Have you tried Titiri Accras? Are they great or what! Let’s hear your comments.

  • 1 pint (560 ml) vegetable oil
Method:
1. Soak and wash the Titiri thoroughly, being careful to remove straws and stones.
2. Add the chopped chive, pepper, salt and ½ pint (280 ml) water.
3. Using flour as required, mix to form a creamy paste.
4. Heat the oil and drop the mixture by spoonfuls into the hot oil.
